A Little more Western history

Click on title

For those of you who don't realize the importance North Dakota has in the history of this nation, I offer this article and my post. Lewis and Clark spent a couple of winters with the Mandan North of Bismarck. Ft Union was the a furtrading post where the nations and the furtrappers would come trade there goods just outside of the modern town of Williston, ND. Ft. Lincoln which was just over the river was where the 7th calvery was posted before they rode out to the Little Bighorn in Montana and into history. Then there's Fort Bufford.

Ft. Bufford is a few miles from where Ft. Union was. It was a military depot in the 1870's-1880's. This is the post that Sitting Bull finally surrendered after living in Canada. The post also had a contengent of Buffalo soldiers.

Also, those of you who were students of Dr. Martin will appriciate this. Teddy Roosevelt ran a herd in south west North Dakota. He had a cowpuncher make fun of his glasses one day and ended up beating the snot out of the cowpoke. He left North Dakota with the nickname "Old Four Eyes." Back in the Old days using the term old whatever was a sign of respect. Teddy Roosevelt and his ramrod also ran in four rustlers about fifty miles to Dickenson, North Dakota. Kinda hard to be a play boy when you run in four rustlers from that distance and you get that much respect that you had cowpoke volunteer ten years for duty with the Roughriders in Cuba.
